Renewing Wedding Vows is a Matter of Choice

Every couple reaching middle age can look at the possibility of renewing wedding vows. It’s a great way to say I love you. The excitement lies not only in reciting the vows but in planning for the event. It sends the couple on a nostalgia trip, where they may want to recreate the magic of their marriage again.

The ceremony gives them a reason to look back and see where they failed as husband and wife, and to atone for those failures by renewing their wedding vows. The chances are that the wedding will become stronger.

The excitement starts with the fixing of date. The couple now has to get an invitation card printed, decide the guest list and decide the venue. The key decision is: should the ceremony be a replica of the wedding or should it be different?


Some couples go to the extent of inviting the Best Man, the Maid of Honor, and the bridesmaids who had accompanied them to the altar. Some even invite the same priest. The others would like the event to mark a new beginning in their life. They would therefore like to hold the event in keeping with their present status and position in life.

This may mean going to an exotic locale and renewing the vows; holding a grand ceremony on the lawns of their residence, at a star hotel or at a wedding resort. The choices are endless. It is an occasion to rejoice, and celebrate.

Fortunately, there are no rules to restrict the couple. They can renew the vows in each other’s arms without a soul in sight or in the presence of a large gathering of friends, family and relatives. They can have a priest recite the holy vows or ask their best friend to do the honors.

They can follow the scriptures or write their own vows; they can get a dress that is reminiscent of the one they wore on their wedding day or get a new dress made. There is no religious or official sanctity attached to the occasion, only a sentimental value.

However, it will be foolish to dismiss the ceremony as of no consequence. It has great emotional value. If done the right way it can rekindle passion, and cement marriages. It can even save those marriages where the wedding vows have been broken with impunity. It is like the renewal of a relationship, an assertion of enduring love.
