Don’t Tie Yourself in Knots While Writing Your Wedding Vows
January 16, 2006 | All Wedding Articles, Wedding Vows
Writing wedding vows is as easy or as hard as you want to make it. The first mistake that most writers make is that they start off with a vow to be different. This is the most difficult vow to keep. It invariably ties them up in knots, and their wedding vows become repetitive, clichéd and tired.
If you want to write a wedding vow that is music to the ears then decide to write a simple vow. Don’t try and imitate what your friends wrote. You must write your wedding vow from your heart. Its overriding feature should be its sincerity.
Some of the points that you need to include in your wedding vow are: the greatest quality of the person you are going to marry; how did you fall in love; what does marriage mean to you; how do you visualize life after marriage; what are going to be your new commitments in life; what are the goals and dreams that you share; and most important how would you keep the marriage alive and healthy.
If you get stuck for words you can consider speaking your vows into a tape recorder. You will find that words flow more easily, when you speak. After that you can transcribe the vows, editing out the portions that you don’t want.
It is not a bad idea to write the vows together, instead of writing it separately. There is more harmony, and unity of thoughts, and less repetition. However, there are many couples who would like to keep their wedding vows to themselves. This way they surprise their partners with their thoughts and bring freshness to the ceremony.
Once you are ready with your first draft you need to call in your best friend, and read the draft. You will find that there are several sentences that sound pompous when put in words; delete those sentences. You will also find some sentences that affect the flow. Modify these sentences or drop them altogether.
The final draft is now ready for the officiant’s scrutiny. It is possible that he may seek some changes here and there; by all means make those changes. Brush up anything else that you had missed.
You are now ready to write your wedding vows.
