Anniversary Wedding Vows Are a Matter of Choice

January 8, 2006 | All Wedding Articles, Wedding Vows

Anniversary wedding vows provide a reason for a couple to reaffirm their commitment to each other. They can use the occasion to re-enact their wedding on a larger, grander scale. They can also use the occasion to travel down memory lane, and make amends for broken promises and pledges.

The anniversary vows are not governed by any rituals or traditional rules. The most that is expected of a couple is that they should not ask for gifts. Otherwise, they are free to conduct the wedding vow ceremony as they deem fit.

They can make their vows in a church if their earlier wedding was solemnized at a registrar’s office. If they were married in a church they can return to the same church and ask for a similar ceremony to be recreated. They can order the same flowers, the same music band, even the same priest.

They can even request the Best Man and Maid of Honor as well as bridesmaids to do the honors once again or they may ask their children to play the role of attendants. The couple can choose the same wedding vows or modify them to reflect the new realities. They can even consider reciting traditional Christian vows as an extra act of faith in religion.

The couple also has the option to break away from the past, and take their anniversary vows at a wedding resort, on a ship or even underwater. They can follow this up with a large and lavish party, or confine the ceremony to the immediate family and friends.

The couple must realize that the anniversary vows ceremony is not a religious affair. There is also no compulsion from the state that every married couple should take an anniversary vow. It is purely a personal event. It can be observed on the 5th, 10th or 25th wedding anniversary. It can also be observed in any of the intermittent years if the couple so desires.

However, couples should not turn the anniversary vow ceremony into a shallow, commercial function. They must use the occasion to strengthen their marriage, and come closer to each other.
